Are Aliens Out There? Of Course!

This afternoon I watched the TEDx talk, “Seth Shostak: ET is (probably) out there — get ready.” I totally agree with what Seth says about the statistical probability / near certainly of extra-terrestrial life and intelligence being “out there” in space. I also agree with his point that we need to focus on getting kids between age 8 and 11 both excited and interested in science, because ideas they encounter at that age can have a MAJOR impact on their life studies, interests, hobbies, profession, and “trajectory.” Check out the talk, it’s excellent. I told my 9 year old about this, and she watched it on my iPhone. Woo hoo for videos which encourage STEM interests!

  • Are aliens out there? Heck no Wes! According to the History Channel, the aliens are already here! Look no further than Ancient Aliens or the equally hilarious America Unearthed! I got to thinking about how these shows are presented as truth, when in fact they are not. I wondered if they can be used to foster critical thinking skills? Here is what I came up with: http://holtthink.tumblr.com/post/41677429670

    Keep up the good work!

I’ve actually watched some of those “ancient aliens” programs on Netflix with my son and they DID lead to some great discussions… he got really into those last summer. You really should watch this TedX talk by Seth tho if you haven’t….. The universe is so big, and our discoveries about ‘comparable’ planets to our own are so recent and staggering….. it’s really just ludicrous to imagine we could be alone in a universe as big as ours. 🙂
